Graphic Design Trend: Abstract Asymmetrical Background and Patterns

Updated: Feb 20, 2022

What are Abstract Asymmetrical backgrounds and patterns? Natasya Sunarto said it best in the article Graphic Design Trends: What’s Coming in 2022 + Expert Tips;

“Heavily influenced by the retro style, expect geometric backgrounds and patterns to stay in 2022. In 2020, the geometric pattern style was made popular through Abstract Geometry, and the popularity continued to rise in 2021. With the influence of creative pragmatism, expect to see more creative usage of icons to come up with abstract, asymmetrical patterns.”

Where to start with creating your own Abstract Asymmetrical Background and Patterns? I started with one fun and achievable step, picking a fun color palette. There are many ways to do this. You could make one up but I find that a little difficult so I like to use online generators. Coolors.co is my favorite because they’re very user friendly, you have the option to browse popular palettes or simply use their generator to make one up for you. Choose a palette with 4-5 colors of interest to you and Coolors.co will display the HEX number for you to use. You might not end up using all colors but having some you like always helps the process.

I chose the colors; FFBE0B (Mango), FB5607 (Orange Pantone), FF006E (Winter Sky), 8338EC (Blue Violet), and 3A86FF (Azure). One thing I noticed when doing research is that black and/or white is always present in these patterns. This might be for the simple fact that the design would be too busy to the viewer's eye and the design might become lost. One designer that I came across on Dribbble.com who Abstract Asymmetrical background and patterns uses black or white in every design. The patterns come out clean and precise because of using black and white, their designs are filled with shapes and negative space. I ended up using all five colors I picked out plus black to play with the negative space. Neo Geometric from Dribbble is who I used to help come up with the shapes in my own design, making all my own in some way. My overall review of this trend is that it’s great graphic design practice. Abstract Asymmetrical Backgrounds and Patterns don’t seem to serve any purpose standing alone but they are easy and fun to make, I definitely would make one again.
