Graphic Design Trend: Expressive and Experimental Typography

This graphic design trend is a great way to express words without saying much. An opportunity to make a big impact with only a word or two. What intrigued me about this trend is that it’s very self-expressive and abstract in color and shape. All of the research suggests Expressive and Experimental Lettering is hard to pull off, especially if your audience is not subjected to it but if you are willing to take the risk, the reward is big.

When making my own expressive/experimental typography graphic design, I wanted to choose one word to make a big impact without any explanation. I wanted the graphic to represent the word. I started out by choosing a palette from Coolers.com. After deciding my palette of funky 70’s themed colors, I wrote the word “Chaos” out in the Adobe Font, “Hegante”. I chose this font because I thought it fit my 70’s theme. In order to make “Chaos” feel chaotic, I made five other copies of the word, each time getting bigger in size. At first, I had the layered words all in the same line, but it wasn’t chaotic enough for me. I rotated each layer counter clockwise a little more each time to the left. I chose to keep the whitespace around the design in order to create the statement I was looking for.

Typography plays a big part in everyday life. When doing something simple in everyday life, like grocery shopping, we are surrounded by typography. It’s weaved into the world because it’s the way we read and perceive things. Every aspect of each font like the weight (size), loops, and serifs (tails) could all have different meanings. This graphic design trend, Expressive and Experimental Typography, will be great practice for anyone who is interested in honing in on expert typography. Logo design is a huge industry and expressive typography plays a huge part in that. The abstract and experimental aspect of the trend lets creative juices flow, aiding to create something beautiful.
